Our science curriculum comes from two major
sources. First, second grade completes
two experiential science units throughout
the course of the year: Interactions and
Plant and Animal Life Cycles. The
first begins in mid-October and ends around
Thanksgiving. The second begins in
March and ends in May.
In addition to these two core units,
students participate in scientific
activities such as visiting the planetarium
is December, learning about Arctic Animals
when completing their reports for writing,
and discussing animals during Reader's
Workshop when studying a theme entitled
"Amazing Animals."
Since our literacy program is in-depth,
science skills and concepts are often
covered through units of study and themes of
both our reading and writing programs.
Separate science instructional time is
shared with social studies, handwriting, and
grammar. During these science lessons,
the focus is on experiments and the
scientific process while research and
discovery elements of our science program
are covered through the literacy program. |
