Due to the in-depth nature of
our literacy program, social
studies shares a time block with
other areas such as science,
handwriting and grammar.
However, our literacy program
aims at creating an integrated
curriculum in which the students
are gaining social studies
concepts while at the same time
practicing their language arts.
Often our Reading Themes lend
themselves to social studies
units which are enhanced through
the alternating afternoon time
for social studies. Some
of these themes include: Around
Town - Neighborhood and
Community, Biographies: A Genre
Study, and Family Time.
To further this integrated
curriculum we also cover
holidays and historical themes
that relate to holidays
throughout the year such as
Columbus Day, Native American's
Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther
King Jr. Day, President's Day,
Black History Month, Famous
Women in History (the month of
March), and Flag Day to name a
few. |
