Saxon Math

This year our class will be learning lots of new math concepts. For the first few months of school, we will be reviewing first grade math skills. It is very important that your child knows how to count and correctly write all numbers to 100.

Also, your child will be bringing home math fact flash cards very soon. It is very important that these cards are practiced each day so that your child can memorize the facts.

For the first few weeks of school, we will be reviewing the following math concepts:

  • Graphing
  • Telling and showing time to the hour
  • Patterning
  • Fractional Parts
  • Addition facts (doubles, +0, +1, +2, +9)
  • Addition (some, some more) and subtraction (some, some went away) stories

Addition facts will be getting more difficult in the coming weeks. Please be sure to practice addition fact cards that are sent home each day. Remember to send the fact card folder back to school so new cards can be added.

Your child will have math homework each day, Monday through Thursday. Please be sure your child has a quiet place to concentrate, and be sure to help your child with the homework. You can help your child be successful in math this year by checking his/her homework before it is handed in. Then ask your child to correct any mistakes immediately. That way, he/she is more likely to remember the skill correctly.

Also, your child will have a math assessment each Friday. The very best way to be sure your child is prepared for these tests is by making sure your child completes homework and practices fact cards each day.
