Animals Vocabulary

1.  habitat- a  place where an animal lives
MUST HAVE food, shelter, water & space

2. habitat diversity- the different plants, animals & physical things (water, trees) that are in a habitat

3.adapt- process by which a species changes over time in order to survive in the environment around them

4.adaptation-improves an animals survival, a body part or activity that helps a living thing to survive

5.  hibernation- long period of deep sleep used by some animals to survive the winter

6. migration- an adaptation of traveling a great distance to survive in the winter

7. loss of habitat- changes in a habitat that affect the wildlife in the area*makes animals endangered

8.limiting factor- things like predators, disease, hunters, climate and pollution that make the number of a certain type of animals go down

9.endangered species-plant or animal in danger of becoming extinct

10. increase- to go up

11. decrease- to go down

12.learned- taught to you *told *by example 
(ex. Walking, reading, riding a bike)

13. inherited- passed on from parents & grandparents
(ex: blue eyes, brown hair)

14. life cycle-  stages of growth of a plant or animal from the beginning to the end of life

15. life span- length of time from beginning of life to the end(#)

 

 

 

Food Chain & Food Web Vocabulary

 ***all food chains start with….-green plant***

1. food chain- path by which energy passes from one living thing to another


2. food web- shows how all the animals in a community get their food
(food chains overlap)
3. energy- the ability to do work…comes from food


4. organism- a living thing

 

5. community- all the plants and animals in a certain area


6. predator- an animal that hunts other animals for food


7. prey-an animal that is hunted for food


8. producer- name given to green plants because they make (produce)
their own food


9. consumer- name given to animals because they get (consume) food
 for energy


10. decomposer-last step in the food chain, these organisms break down
 the bodies of dead animals and return energy to earth


11. herbivore- an animal that eats only plants


12. carnivore- an animal that eats only meat


13. omnivore- an animal that eats both meat and plants


14. diurnal- day hunters, night sleepers


15. nocturnal- night hunters, day sleepers


16. decrease- to go down


17. increase- to go up
