Buoyancy

 "Floating and Sinking"

Why do things float?
Why do things sink?
What do you think?
What do you think?
Things that float
are lighter than water.
That's why they float.
That's why they float.
Things that sink
are heavier than water.
That's why they sink.
That's why they sink.

balance
- a tool used to measure mass
buoyancy- a force in fluids that opposes the force of gravity
capacity- the amount that can be held by a container
cargo- the total amount of weight that is carried on a boat
density- a property of matter that is a measurement of the amount of mass per unit volume of the substance; the more tightly packed the particles within a substance are, the more dense it is
displacement- one object moves out of the way to make room for another
float- when part or all of a material is above the surface of a liquid
fluids- a substance-either gas or liquid-that flows and exerts a buoyant force on objects placed in it
force- a push or a pull
gravity- the tendency for large objects to attract other objects; gravity on earth results in objects being pulled towards the earth
length- the property of matter that can be measured with a ruler
mass- the amount of material in an object; a property of matter that can be measured with a balance
prediction-what you think will happen in the future
properties- the qualities used to describe objects such as size, color and shape
sink- when no part of an object is above the surface of a liquid
surface area- the amount of space on the outside of an object, measured in square units
volume- the amount of space an object takes up; a property of matter that is measured in different ways.  Water displacement can be used to measure the volume of a solid
weight- a measurement of the force of gravity on an object; a property of matter that changes depending on the location of the object and the amount of gravity acting on it.
