Electricity Vocabulary

energy ability to do work
(heat, light, sound, chemical, electrical, mechanical)

types of energy sound, light, heat, electrical, mechanical, chemical
electricity a form of energy which can move from one place to another in a closed circuit (path)
current electricity  produced when negative charges move along a path *lights a light bulb
static electricity  made by friction,  makes hair rise when you pull a sweater over your head
circuit path through which electrical current may flow
open circuit electricity does not flow, one part is not connected , light bulb does not light
closed circuit complete circuit, light bulb will light
 filament on bulb, produces light
terminals  points which must be touched in order to make a complete circuit
base terminal  on base of bulb, *must be touched in order to light bulb
insulator on a bulb *prevents the passage of electricity (nonconductor)
side terminal at bottom of bulb*must be touched in order to complete circuit
support wires in a bulb*hold filament, electricity flows through them
parallel circuit

2 paths

*if one bulb goes out, others stay lit
(bulbs added = same brightness)

 series circuit

1 path

*if one bulb goes out, all go out
(more bulbs added=dimmer)

conductor material through which energy moves*copper wire is a good one
nonconductor

material that does not allow movement of electricity through it
(ex- WOOD)
