Matter Vocabulary
matter	anything that has mass and takes up space
3 states of matter	SOLID, LIQUID, GAS
solid	keeps size, keeps shape -->Ex- wood
liquid	keeps size, changes shape, takes on shape of container Ex- water
gas	often invisible, no definite size or shape Ex- oxygen
freeze	a liquid becomes very cold and changes into a solid LIQUID-->SOLID
ice	water in the solid state
melt	a solid becomes very hot and changes to a liquid SOLID-->LIQUID
water	water in the liquid state
boil	to become very hot, to change water (liquid) to water vapor (gas)
water vapor	water in the gas state
chemical change	when matter changes into a new substance EX- baking soda + vinegar = carbon dioxide
physical change	physical characteristics change, substance stays the same, EX- pencil-->broken pencil
property	describes matter EX- size, color, shape, weight, length, texture
classify	to sort things into groups where they belong
unit of measurement	label used when measuring matter grams, millimeters, inches, centimeters, yards
mass	measure of matter in an object
gram	unit of measure used to measure mass
balance	instrument used for measuring mass
length	measured distance (RULER-cm, mm, in, ft, yd., meters)
ruler	instrument used for measuring length
volume	amount of space an object takes up, GRADUATE-->milliliters, liters
graduate	tool used to measure the volume of liquids (milliliters)
density	the mass in a certain volume of matter
displacement(displace)	liquid is pushed out of the way by an object in the liquid *Great way to measure the VOLUME of odd shaped solids
temperature
thermometer
degrees C or F
