Students are to read two to three easy chapter books of at least 70 pages and one genre book per month. Students are encouraged to read different genres, magazines, and on-line materials.

Standard 3: Reading Habits By the end of third grade, we expect students to: Reading A Lot Ø Read 30 Chapter books, independently or assisted/regularly participate in discussions of reading with a student/group/adult; Ø Read and hear texts read aloud from a variety of genre Ø Read multiple books by one author and identify differences and similarities among them Ø Reread some favorite books by one author and identify differences and similarities among them Ø Read their own writing and the writing of classmates, including pieces in class books or on public display Ø Read the functional and instructional messages in the classroom and some outside of school Ø Listen to and discuss at least one chapter read to them every day, and Ø Voluntarily read to each other. Signaling their sense of themselves as readers.
