Human Body Vocabulary

 

 

1. cell – smallest part of the body

2. tissue – a group of cells that works together to do certain jobs in the body

3. organ – a group of tissues that work together in the body

4. system – group of cells, tissues and organs that work together in the body

5. digestive system – system used to break down food in the body

6. respiratory system – system that circulates oxygen in the body

7. skeletal system – system of bones which supports the body

8. esophagus – tube that carries food to the stomach

9. diaphragm – a sheet of muscle that separates the chest and abdomen

10. saliva – fluid containing salt, water and proteins in the mouth which aid in digestion

11. intestine – long tube in the abdomen which helps digestion and carries waste to be discharged

12. excrete – to separate waste from the body

13. tendon – tough cord-like tissue that connects muscle to bone

14. ligament – strong bands of connective tissue that hold bones together at a joint

15. joint – where two or more bones meet in the body

16. cartilage – connective tissue found in joints

17. bronchi – tubes that carry air into and out of the lungs

18. muscle –tissue which contracts and can produce motion

19. nutrition – process in which bodies take in and make use of food

20. enzymes - molecules in the body which speed up chemical reactions
